A "good" PPI is one where the human eye can no longer distinguish individual pixels at a normal viewing distance. This is what Apple famously marketed as "Retina." For a typical monitor viewing distance of 20–30 inches (50–75 cm), the threshold for a "perfect" image is roughly 220 PPI.
However, achieving 220 PPI on a large desktop monitor is both expensive and taxing on hardware. Most users find that a display becomes "sharp enough" once it crosses the 100 PPI mark.
