Difference Between Dead and Stuck Pixels

When checking your monitor, you may encounter two types of pixel defects. Understanding the difference is crucial for determining if they can be fixed.

1. What is a Dead Pixel?

A Dead Pixel occurs when the subpixels are permanently turned off. It appears as a tiny black dot on a white background. Unfortunately, dead pixels are usually permanent hardware failures and cannot be fixed by software.

2. What is a Stuck Pixel?

A Stuck Pixel is one that is permanently frozen on a specific color (Red, Green, or Blue). Unlike dead pixels, stuck pixels can sometimes be revived by rapidly flashing colors on the screen for several hours. This tool allows you to cycle colors to identify these stuck points.

3. Acceptable Defect Levels (ISO 13406-2)

Did you know that manufacturers have an allowance for dead pixels? Class II monitors (the most common) are permitted to have a small number of faulty pixels before a warranty replacement is valid. Use this tool to count your defects before contacting support.
